When you or your kids play sports or martial arts, there is always the risk of a tooth being cracked, chipped, or even knocked out completely! To provide a protective layer for your smile, we may recommend a custom-made mouthguard. In today’s blog, your Olathe, KS, dentists talk about how we help protect smiles of all ages!
Creating a Custom Mouthguard
You can always go to a sporting goods store and buy a boil-and-bite option for your smile or for your child’s. While somewhat effective, a custom option provides a greater level of protection. Obtaining one is simple. First, stop by our office so we can take detailed digital images of your smile with advanced technology. We use these to create a 3D computer impression, one far more accurate than a traditional physical one. We then use this to design and custom-fit a mouthguard for the smile.
Preventing Injuries
When worn while playing sports and martial arts, this limits the severity and risk of injury. What would otherwise be a cracked or chipped tooth is now only an ache, and you could avoid a tooth being knocked loose or out completely. You and your children then avoid the need for dental bonding and crowns to repair injured teeth, and have a reduced risk of complications like tooth decay and dental infection too. If you have a hobby or sport that could potentially risk injury to your teeth, then talk to our team about a custom-made mouthguard.
Responding to Dental Emergencies
What happens when an injury occurs during a full contact sport? Well, if a tooth is injured, rinse with warm water and use a cold compress to control facials welling. Cloth or gauze can help stem any bleeding. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever. If a piece of your tooth can be recovered, bring it with you to see us. Give us a call right away, even outside of normal business hours, and we will arrange for a time to see you. If a tooth is knocked out completely, then pick it by the crown, never the root, and gently rinse away dirt and foreign debris, but take care to keep tissues in place. Put it in a glass of salt water or milk, and bring it with you to the office.
