Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, could mean serious trouble for your smile unless removed. When these new teeth erupt in the rear of your mouth, this could complicate the health, function, and beauty of your smile. To preserve your smile, your Olathe, KS, dentists may suggest extracting your wisdom teeth.
The Complications of Third Molars
The third molars don’t erupt until we reach our late teens or early 20s. For many, there simply isn’t enough room in the smile for them, so their eruption causes serious complications. For example, dental misalignment could develop, which in turn causes negative impacts on both the health and beauty of your smile. Their arrival could mean a partial eruption known as an impaction, as well as a greater risk of injury or infection.
Ensuring a Comfortable Extraction
To prevent these complications, we can simply remove them prior to eruption. We start by taking detailed digital x-ray images, so we can find the position of the teeth and make sure the extraction avoids sinus cavities or nerve tissues. We then administer a local numbing agent. We also have dental sedation for those with anxiety! We open the area of the gums above them to access and remove the wisdom teeth with a pair of forceps. Then we suture the extraction site closed. A friend or family member can bring you home, and for a day you should rest and avoid activity. Don’t use a straw or poke the extraction site with your tongue, and enjoy only soft food items. Be sure you take any prescribed medications as instructed. In a follow-up visit, we will remove the dentures.
Tooth Replacement
Wisdom teeth do not need to be replaced, but should you have a tooth extracted due to injury, decay, or infection, then there could be a gap in your smile.
