When you have malocclusion, this means uneven teeth. In addition to impacting your smile’s appearance, this could mean trouble for oral health and function. To offer a cosmetic approach, instead of using braces we could employ clear aligners to treat misalignment. In today’s blog, your Olathe, KS, dentists talk about SureSmile aligners.
The Causes and Dangers of Misalignment
Dental misalignment could occur for a number of different reasons. For example, the premature loss of a baby tooth, or complications with the eruption of the permanent teeth. Issues with the growth and development of the jaw and certain oral structures is a factor, as is thumb sucking in childhood or injury to the face or jaw. Without treatment, misalignment allows food particles to become trapped in your smile even if you brush and floss, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. The strain on your jaw joints due to bite imbalance could also lead to TMJ disorder and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). You could also simply feel uncomfortable with the appearance of your smile!
Creating Plastic Aligners
To begin treatment, schedule a consultation with our team. We will carefully examine your smile to assess the cause of your misalignment and to understand the extent. If we decide that clear aligners are right for you, our team will gather detailed digital images from several angles, and combine them to make a 3D computer impression. Using this impression, we can design and craft the aligners from a BPA-free plastic material. Each set is then custom-made for your smile, for treatment with precision and accuracy, and to ensure a comfortable fit.
SureSmile Treatment
When your aligners are ready, you can start treatment. A set is worn daily for between 20 and 23 hours, it all depends on the dentist’s recommendations. They’re worn for a two-week period, and then you move on to the next set in the series. This process is repeated for the duration of treatment. For adults, this could take as little as a year, while teens may need around 18 months to see optimal results. For convenience, these can be removed before each meal, and prior to brushing and flossing your teeth. You can even take them out for special occasions!
