Summer is slowly nearing its end in Olathe, Kansas. To celebrate the rest of the season, there are plenty of events in the local community going on outside. This year’s nearby Kansas City Big Picnic is back and bigger than ever. Last year’s Big Picnic celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Kansas City Parks and Recreation department. The whole month of July is a celebration of the department. The Parks and Rec team partners with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art to create the Big Picnic. This evening picnic is filled with live music, food trucks, art activities and lawn games. There are more than 30 sculptures on display. You can use the hashtag #WhereKCPlays to post to and follow along with the event. There will be plenty of photo opportunities with giant Adirondack chairs and giant picture frames. There will also be other larger-than-life picnic whimsies with giant ants and giant food sculptures. There will be lawn games, activities for kids and adults, and bubbles to play with. Along with live music, there will be other types of live performances with live actors from Shakespeare Pop-Up Performances and puppet performances. The Big Picnic will happen whether it rains or the sun is out to play.
