Don’t Skip Your Checkup!

June 13, 2019

We know that summer is a busy time for families in Olathe, KS. However, that doesn’t mean you should put off your regular checkup and cleaning visit! These visits may not seem important, but they’re actually vital for the continued health and beauty of your smile. In today’s blog, we’re talking about why you should never skip your checkups!

Watching for Cavities and Gum Disease

When you come in for a checkup, we will perform a visual scan of your smile. Our team also implements digital technology, including digital x-rays and intraoral cameras, to obtain detailed images of your teeth, gums, roots, and jaw, both above and beneath the gums. Using these images, we can perform a detailed diagnosis. We often uncover the warning signs of developing tooth decay, gingivitis, and gum disease, creating a personalized treatment to treat and manage these concerns. We also look for indicators of wear and friction on the teeth, or strain on the jaw joints, to identify the presence of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding), again treating the problem before the stability and health of your smile is at risk. We may also discuss better oral hygiene routines and other steps to help safeguard your oral health.

Oral Cancer Screenings

During your exam, we will also perform an oral cancer screening. Did you know that of the over 50,000 people diagnosed with the disease each year, nearly half will succumb to oral cancer within just five years? This is mainly due to the fact that the disease is rarely caught in the early stages, but having a yearly screening will increase the chances of a full recovery as the disease could be identified in the earliest stages.

Dental Cleanings

During your visit we will also clean your teeth, which involves carefully removing all plaque and tartar from the teeth, a process that not only leads to brighter teeth and fresher breath, but also a reduced risk of cavities and gum disease. An exam and cleaning is important for patients of all ages, from children as young as age three to adults. Be sure to let us know if you experience changes in your smile, such as toothaches, tooth sensitivity, sore or bleeding gums, or rough patches or lesions that don’t heal after two weeks. If you have any questions about our checkup and cleaning visits, then please contact our team today.
