When Do You Need Sedation?

May 30, 2019

Oral surgery helps our Olathe, KS, patients enjoy optimal oral health, addressing missing teeth with implant dentistry and even removing wisdom teeth. To ensure our patients remain comfortable throughout these procedures, we provide dental sedation. Find out how our sedation relaxes patients, and what you can expect from this calming option.

Common Oral Surgery Situations

Oral surgery could mean extracting a tooth, such as a wisdom tooth, preventing a painful impaction and preserving the alignment and beauty of your smile. We may also offer jawbone grafting, a procedure that strengthens the jawbone, which could dissolve following tooth loss. If you have one or more missing teeth, then we may be able to place one or more dental implants to secure a single replacement tooth or create a fixed bridge or denture. We want to help you enjoy a healthy smile, one that looks beautiful and inspires confidence, and we will take steps to ensure the procedure is comfortable throughout the treatment process.

IV Sedation

As the name implies, IV sedation is administered through an IV. The patient then enters a deep state of relaxation, with little to no memory of the procedure afterward. We will work with a trained anesthesiologist and monitor the patient throughout the procedure. We may suggest this option for those with severe dental anxiety or other issues that make undergoing even routine care difficult. The procedure also helps those undergoing oral surgery reaming comfortable and calm. If you feel anxiety about treatment, or if you’re ready to address serious oral health concerns, then please let our team know!

Preparation and Aftercare

We may suggest avoiding heavy meals in the six to eight hours prior to the procedure. When the treatment ends, you will still feel a bit groggy as the effects take time to wear off. We suggest arranging for a friend or family member to bring you home. If you’ve undergone oral surgery, then we will have detailed instructions in the hours and days following for eating and drinking, to ensure a proper healing period. We will also schedule a follow-up visit. If you have any questions about our oral surgical procedures, or about the calming options we offer our patients, then please contact our team today.
