New Year’s Resolutions for Your Smile

December 27, 2022
2023 Goals

What resolution have you made for 2023? You can pick up new healthy habits, or maybe a brand-new hobby. But don’t forget about your teeth and gums! In today’s blog, your Olathe, KS, dentists talk about how to make positive changes for your oral health in the new year, so you can smile with confidence in 2023 and beyond!

Better Brushing

How often do you brush, and how long do you clean your teeth each time? To protect our smiles from poor oral health, we need to brush our teeth for two minutes in the morning and again at night. This ensures we’re reaching every available surface and removing the particles left behind by our foods and drinks. You can use an electric or manual toothbrush, as long as you use them properly both are beneficial. But we do urge you to use soft bristles to prevent gum recession or enamel damage if you clean too rough. You should also pick up a toothpaste with the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance, as this means it contains fluoride. Using toothpaste with fluoride helps strengthen the protective layer of outer enamel, making cavities less likely.

Start Flossing!

Flossing is absolutely essential and should happen every evening. This removes what a toothbrush cannot reach, and helps lower the risk of gingivitis and gum disease. Some people use tape or picks, or even water flossers. Just make sure you’re running the tape up and down each side of every tooth. You should also dip below the gum line in a “c” motion, as this removes any trapped food particles.

Healthier Mealtime Options

What you eat and drink impacts your smile too! Items with a lot of sugar and starch will leave behind trapped food particles for harmful oral bacteria to consume, which then leads to plaque and tartar buildup. The risk of cavities and gum disease then increases significantly! Be sure to add more fresh fruits and veggies, and cut back on snacks and treats high in sugar and starch.

Checkups and Cleanings

We also urge you to see us soon for a checkup and cleaning, so we can watch for signs of trouble and provide treatment to keep your smile bright and healthy. We will also clean your teeth to fight poor oral health and keep your breath fresh and your teeth bright!
