While brushing and flossing at home is essential for good oral health, you also need professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar buildup. Otherwise, you could develop a higher risk of cavities and even gum disease! In today’s blog, your Olathe, KS, dentists talk about our approach to professional dental cleanings.

The Risks of Untreated Plaque and Tartar

Plaque buildup occurs when harmful oral bacteria break down the particles of sugar and starch left behind by the foods and drinks we consume. This creates a layer that coats the teeth and over time, hardens into tartar. Without removal, this layer grows more severe with time and could erode the outer enamel to cause cavities and dental infections. This could also irritate and inflame gum tissues to cause gingivitis and gum disease too. These layers are also linked to bad breath and even stained teeth. Which is why you need to see us regularly to have plaque and tartar completely removed.

Traditional Dental Cleanings

People of all ages, from two and up, need to see us twice a year for a dental cleaning. The cleaning involves using an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool to break up and remove the layers of plague and tartar. The process takes only a few minutes, and helps lower the risk of cavities and gum disease. The last step of the process involves polishing the teeth for a brighter appearance and a smoother finish.

Scaling and Root Planing

But if you have sore, red, or bleeding gums, you may need a deep cleaning, known as a scaling and root planing. This could reverse gingivitis, or help us begin to manage gum disease and protect the smile. We will first numb the smile with a local anesthesia, and then our team will use an ultrasonic scaling device and pick to remove buildup from both the roots and the teeth. This could take one visit or up to four, depending on how extensive the buildup actually is. Afterward, we again polish the teeth for a brighter appearance. You may then need a traditional cleaning every three to four months to properly care for the smile and protect it from periodontal issues.
