IV Sedation

We know that undergoing oral surgery can make you feel nervous, but don’t worry, we offer treatments to help ensure comfort, even for those with anxiety or special needs. In today’s blog, your Olathe, KS, dentists talk about our use of IV sedation to keep everyone calm and comfortably, so they can focus on their newly improved smile!

When You Need Sedation

When we treat smiles, whether we’re placing a filling or a crown, we will administer a numbing agent to keep you comfortable. But for more involved procedures, such as tooth extraction or dental implant placement, we may provide more than just a local anesthetic. Dental sedation helps people enter a calm and relaxed state, with little to no memory of the procedure at all. This could also help those with high levels of dental anxiety or special needs, which could make undergoing even minor treatments difficult. Unlike other practices in the area, we’re one of the only general dentist offices to offer IV sedation.

The IV Approach

Essentially, a numbing agent is administered through an IV and into the bloodstream. This helps people enter the deepest state of relaxation and calm possible, with no memory of the treatment. A trained anesthesiologist will be one hand to monitor the process. When the procedure is over, the effects will take time to wear off, so you will need a friend or family member on hand to bring you home. We will of course provide precautions for any necessary medications, and special instructions to facilitate a good healing process. In addition to IV, we have nitrous oxide, which is administered through the nose in gas form. The effects wear off as soon as the procedure ends, and most people can drive themselves home or return to work. We also have oral conscious sedation, given in pill or liquid form before the procedure, so people enter a deeper state of calm.

Oral Surgery

Let’s talk about our oral surgical procedures, the ones we may recommend sedation for. If we need to remove wisdom teeth to preserve the smile, or remove teeth to prepare the smile for dental implants or implant dentures, we could gently extract the teeth. We also use oral surgery to insert dental implant posts to replace missing teeth. If your jaw has lost jawbone mass and density following tooth loss, we can rebuild structure with grafting and sinus lifts.
