Crafting A Crown That Blends With Your Smile

February 8, 2022

When you have a serious injury, or a more advanced case of tooth decay, then dental bonding and fillings may not be enough to treat your smile. Instead, you may need a custom-made dental crown! In today’s blog, your Olathe, KS, dentists talk about how we craft a dental crown that blends with your smile.

When Your Smile Needs a Restoration

A crown covers the entire visible portion of your tooth, which is why we may recommend one for more severe oral health issues. For example, placement could be used to address more serious cases of tooth decay, or to treat an infection by completing a root canal procedure. We could repair cracks and chips, and add length to teeth worn down by bruxism (teeth grinding). Placement also helps address issues with the shape of the teeth, and could even aid in tooth replacement by securing a dental bridge or even restoring a single tooth dental implant. If you have an aching tooth or one that is injured, then let us know right away!

Creating a Dental Crown

Every smile is unique, which is why every smile needs a custom-made dental crown. The restoration will be crafted and fitted for you to ensure a comfortable fit and a balanced bite, and to ensure they provide a more lifelike appearance. To begin, our team will carefully examine your smile. We then administer a numbing agent and remove structure from the tooth. Detailed digital images and measurements will be taken of this tooth, and used in a dental lab setting to design and craft the finished product. When your dental restoration is ready, we will check the fit to make sure last-minute adjustments aren’t needed. We then place it with a powerful bonding agent. The entire process only takes as little as two visits!

Lifelike Material

We use a number of materials to provide a more natural appearance. For the front facing teeth, we could opt for all porcelain, which is translucent like tooth enamel and can be shaded to blend with your teeth. Since the side and rear teeth must absorb greater bite forces each day, we could use porcelain-fused-to-metal and zirconia. These can also be shaded to blend with the smile, but they’re much more durable.
