Rebuilding Your Smile With Jawbone Grafting

February 3, 2021

Whether due to the loss of your natural teeth or congenital issues, we could find our smile lacking the proper amount of jawbone mass and density. Over time, this complication itself could mean tooth loss, improper bite balance and complications, and even an aged appearance. To rebuild this lost tissue and prepare your smile for implant placement, your Olathe, KS, dentists may suggest jawbone grafting!

Losing Jawbone Density

For some, they could be born with congenital issues and complications with the growth and development of the jaw structure and oral tissues. These complications could then lead to issues eating and chewing. For others, injury to the mouth or tooth loss could mean the bone tissue in specific portions of the smile don’t receive regular doses of nutrients, losing mass and density with time. To treat these issues, or strengthen the jawbone enough to support new teeth in the form of dental implants, we may suggest jaw surgery, including grafting!

Preparing Your Smile

First, we want to make sure you feel comfortable during your visit. Our team will be happy to answer any questions you may have, and address any concerns. We will administer a numbing agent to the portions of the smile during treatment, and have dental sedation to help you enter a calm and relaxed position. You will remain conscious, but have little to no memory of the experience. Using digital technology, we will take detailed x-ray and intraoral images that enables us to plan the treatment with precision and accuracy, avoiding damage to sensitive tissues to nerve endings while restoring your smile to a more optimal state.

Grafting

We have surgical procedures to address issues with the growth and development of the jaw, treating chronic conditions and correcting injuries. But if you’ve lost tissue to tooth loss or congenital issues, then grafting could restore what has been lost. We may take tissue from the back of the jaw, the chin, or the hip, or use a donor or synthetic material. The tissue is then used to rebuild the jaw, bonding with the existing tissues and ensuring optimal results. You then have a stronger smile. We can help address underlying issues, such as gum disease, to help ensure these results last. If you have missing teeth, we can also proceed with dental implant placement down the road. If you have any questions, give our team a call.
