Supporting Dentures With Dental Implants

January 27, 2021

We recently explained how a bridge could help replace missing teeth, and how dental implants could ensure the prosthetic lasts for years to come. In today’s blog, we continue this conversation by explaining the way your Olathe, KS, dentists use dental implants to support a set of dentures that will never slip.

Losing Jawbone Mass and Density

What happens when we begin to lose our natural teeth? The obvious is a gap in your smile. But you may not realize this gap could lead to complications like misalignment, TMJ disorder, or even bruxism. But one major complication, one that could be addressed with implant dentistry, is the loss of the mass and density in the jawbone. Once the body notices there are not tooth roots, it suspends the flow of key nutrients to that portion of the bone tissue. Over time, the tissue then loses mass and density, a development linked to further tooth loss and an aged appearance!

Designing a Denture

While prosthetics that are removable help restore function and beauty, they don’t slow the rate of jawbone density loss. However, inserting dental implants to support a fixed prosthetic could stimulate the growth of bone tissue once again, safeguarding your smile and your overall facial structure too. To start the process, we need to take detailed digital images and impressions, as well as thorough measurements too. We use these items to help us design the prosthetic in a dental lab setting. Using lifelike materials, we have an option that blends with your smile, preserves your facial structure, and can absorb the bite forces needed to ensure proper function.

Placement

We will insert between four and up to eight dental implants per arch. We then attach abutments that will enable us to secure your finished denture. The prosthetic won’t need to be removed for soaking and cleaning, and will never slip when you eat or speak. You will be able to eat your favorite foods again as well!

Long-Term Benefits

Since the implants act as new roots, your dentures don’t need to be replaced every few years. Instead, they could last for decades to come, possibly even a lifetime!
