We Offer At-Home Teeth Whitening!

February 9, 2019

When we go to a store, we see a number of options offering brighter smiles from the comfort of our own home, everything from strips to whitening toothpastes and rinses. But what if we could offer our Olathe, KS, patients professional results from home as well? With our at-home teeth whitening system we help you enjoy a significantly brighter smile from home!

How Does Our Home-Based Solution Work?

We begin with an office visit. Taking detailed impressions of your smile, we will create a custom-made plastic tray that fits comfortably. We then prescribe the patient a powerful bleaching gel. At home, the patient will fill the tray with gel and wear it for between 30 and 45 minutes a day. Over the course of one to two weeks, the gel will begin to break up and remove discoloration from your smile. For some, teeth will become several shades brighter. You then keep any remaining gel and the trays for touch-ups later on.

What About Permanent Teeth Stains?

Most teeth stains are extrinsic, meaning they form on the surface of our teeth, often as the results of what we eat and drink. Intrinsic stains, also known as permanent discoloration, actually form beneath the tooth enamel, and may be caused by fluorosis, injury, or exposure to certain medications at a young age. While our home-based whitening treatment may remove minor intrinsic stains, serious discoloration may need to be masked with dental bonding or porcelain veneers. We will discuss options to help you enjoy a brighter smile, even if you have severe permanent discoloration.

Keeping Your Smile Bright

What can you do to maintain a brighter smile following treatment? Well, start by making sure you brush your teeth twice daily and floss every night before bed. These actions help remove food particles, a process that helps prevent plaque buildup and protect the smile from stains. We also suggest cutting back on sugary foods and drinks, which promote discoloration. In addition, try to reduce your consumption of beverages with dark pigments, such as coffee, red wine, tea, and soda. With our routine checkups and cleanings, we monitor your smile and remove plaque buildup to help maintain a bright and healthy smile throughout the year.
