Get a Brighter Smile for the New Year

January 2, 2018

A dull or yellow smile can make you feel less confident. You should feel confident about your smile in pictures, in your conversations with other people, and when you are talking or laughing. A brighter smile can make you feel confident and can even make you look a little younger. If you have set-in stains from life or from habits like drinking coffee or smoking cigarettes, whitening your teeth can help to remove those stains. Whitening your teeth can make a big difference in your smile’s appearance. Your dentist can help you in situations when a whitening treatment may not be enough to address your smile’s needs.

Professional Whitening at Home

Your dentist can customize a mouth tray for you to use for whitening your teeth. Customizing your mouth tray allows for the whitening gel to better penetrate the unique curves and corners of your teeth.  The take-home kit will include the custom-designed set of trays for both your upper and lower teeth, instructions, and professional-grade whitening gel.  After 10-14 days of daily use within the comfort of your own home, your teeth can become several shades lighter. If you have extrinsic stains (stains on the outside of your teeth), whitening treatments can help to remove it.

When Whitening Isn’t Enough

Some stains come from inside of the tooth; these stains are known as intrinsic stains. They can be caused by trauma to the tooth, internal bleeding, medications, genetics, age, or certain diseases, which can all cause your teeth to be discolored. A whitening treatment will not work to remove discoloration inside the tooth. For intrinsic stains or discoloration, your dentist may recommend other cosmetic options such as bonding or porcelain veneers to cover the intrinsic stains. These cosmetic options can cover up the discoloration, as well as address issues like chips, cracks, uneven sizes or shapes, gaps, etc.
