The Nutcracker At Johnson Community College

December 16, 2017

Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet is one of the most famous and most seen ballet performances around the world. It is often performed during Christmas due to the seasonal content, and many families make it a holiday tradition to attend a performance. The premise of the Nutcracker is a fairy tale ballet in two acts centered around a family’s Christmas Eve celebration. Originally the story was written by an author and it was called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The written story was then adapted into a ballet with Tchaikovsky composing music to accompany it. The ballet originated in Moscow and was first performed the week before Christmas in 1892. It premiered in western countries in the 1940s and has become a Christmas tradition for many ever since. Many cities across America host their own versions of the traditional ballet. The story centers on a young girl named Clara’s Christmas Eve. The composer made a selection of eight of the more popular musical pieces before the ballet’s December 1892 premiere, creating what is currently known as the Nutcracker Suite. In Overland Park, the Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic is performed by the American Youth Ballet. It is a must-see event with a 40-foot tall tree, snow falling on stage, and a live orchestra to accompany the show.
